A Master Craftsman
It’s important to know your account manager’s capabilities before you enter into an agreement with an energy broker, because you want them to be able to do more than just arrange your contracts.
You might not need them to do anything at all, but it’s helpful to know that if you do require something important, such as a meter upgrade or a new connection, or if you have a dispute with a supplier, you can turn to them for help.
Importantly, you need to know that if anything comes up, they’ll be both willing and able to take ownership of the problem and resolve it.
What is relevant?
Often, an energy broker’s website will list the credentials of their CEO, Managing Director and other key people in the top tier of management, but is this relevant? Does it say anything about how effectively your accounts will be managed?
If an energy broker’s website claims that it’s Directors have ’50 Years Combined Energy Industry Experience’, does it mean that YOU have access to all of that expertise?
Put another way, if you have an issue that you need to be resolved, are their top executives going to be the ones to handle it? Probably not.
In most cases, it’ll be either an appointed account manager, or the sales person that arranged your contract that’s responsible for the management of your account. That being the case, doesn’t it make much more sense to know about them and their expertise?
If you agree that it does, ask.
Here are some examples of useful questions:
- Who is my account manager?
- What is their experience in the energy industry?
- How many other client accounts do they manage?
- What is their role in the company?
- Are they primarily a salesperson?
- If their main role is sales – Will hitting their monthly sales target take priority over managing my account?
If these questions are answered to your satisfaction, you’ll have a better idea of how capable your account manager is, so you can be confident of receiving the service level you require.
